NY Times Article

My friend Vince is finishing up his final year at Princeton Seminary and he occasionally sends me some great resources concerning youth ministry, youth culture, etc. So, for any of you who think things “haven’t really changed” since you were in high school, well….check out this article published last week in the NY Times. It is well worth your time. (Free registration required for NY Times…takes only 30 seconds to complete). No, this isn’t just another “look how many kids are abusing drugs and having pre-marital sex.” Instead, the pressures noted here are much different and, I would contend, every-bit as dangerous. One colleague summed up his take on this article with one word: “disturbing.”

For Girls, It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect Too

Thanks for posting this link, Michael. I read the article, then immediately e-mailed it to everyone in my office. Being in the Admission business, we hear all the time about the pressures students face today to get into the “right” colleges. This is an excellent cautionary article to remind parents/teachers/coaches/etc. about the unspoken & subliminal expectations that our kids can detect. We might say aloud that we want them to relax, but we send different messages with our actions and with the impossible standards we feel we we must live up to but can’t achieve ourselves. How exciting, though, that the main person profiled in the article is a Christian and seems to be both confident in and outspoken about her faith.
