Words of Preparation

I am preaching this Sunday (and next). The text for this week centers on the riot in Ephesus (Acts 19). Essentially, the local silversmith union is going out of business b/c Paul is calling for all to turn from idol worship to the one true God. The thing is, I have a hunch he would do the same today-and we might be surprised at what we would discover, personally and corporately, if asked to identify our idols.

“Ask and examine your heart diligently, and you will find whether it cleaves to God alone or not. If you have a heart that can expect of Him nothing but what is good, especially in want and distress, and that, moreover renounces and forsakes everything that is not God, then you have the only true God.” –Martin Luther, The Large Catechism

We all have our idols, and truthfully, they extend far beyond the usual “love of money,” and toxic culture kind-of-stuff. The great good news is that we can turn once again from these idols we hope will save and complete our lives….to the Savior who is truly able to save us.
